Trademarks
All promotional items that use a UT trademark — any of our Cockrell School wordmarks, the UT secondary marks (longhorn silhouette, tower, seal, hook ’em hand) or any of these protected phrases — must have approval through both your CSU and The University for the vendor to actually make the item. This process is handled through submission to the UT trademarks portal.
Timing
In general, for new designs, we recommend having 6-8 weeks for the total process (from the idea stage to getting it in your hands). Repeat items/artwork can be as short as 2-3 weeks.
Before Beginning Artwork
- Make sure you are familiar with the Cockrell Brand Guidelines
- Note: There are existing resources and graphic assets that may help you begin your design
- Make sure you know the rules regarding the use of the Longhorn Silhouette, Seal, Tower & Hook ‘Em Hand
Process
- For faculty and staff: Access the UT trademarks portal: https://portal.trademarks.utexas.edu/
- Fill out the online form, using your EID and selecting “Cockrell School of Engineering” from the dropdown menu. This will notify the Cockrell School trademark representative.
- Once approved by the Cockrell School, artwork will then be reviewed by the Office of Brand Trademarks and Licensing.
- Once both approvals have been issued, the portal will send a release through email to the vendor, allowing them to use our marks. They can then print/create items without penalty of law or trademark infringement. This is where any royalty fees will be assessed.
- For Cockrell student organizations: detailed directions are available at the Office of the Dean of Students website.
- Registered Student Organizations (most common) must work with the Office of the Dean of Students for approvals. Select ‘Registered Student Organizations’ when sending your trademark design through the UT trademarks portal.
Note: If ‘Registered Student Organizations’ does not show up in the dropdown menu, choose My Profile and select the checkbox for ‘Registered Student Organizations’ - Sponsored Student Organizations should coordinate with the sponsoring administrative or academic unit (department or college) through the Internal Request Portal to receive approval from the Office of Brand, Trademarks and Licensing.
