Alexander Liu, an electrical engineering graduate student, won the Best Student Paper Award at the International Conference on Data Mining. Guided by Dr. Joydeep Ghosh, a professor who holds the Schlumberger Centennial Chair in Electrical Engineering, and Dr. Cheryl Martin, a research scientist at Applied Research Laboratories, their paper proposed new solutions to particular problems in data mining and machine learning, for example, teaching computers to detect interesting patterns such as unknown pieces of information or
previously unknown correlations.
