David Maidment, professor of environmental engineering at The University of Texas at Austin, testified on July 28, 2010 to the U.S. Senate Ad Hoc Subcommittee on Disaster Recovery and the Ad Hoc Subcommittee on State, Local, and Private Sector Preparedness and Integration. The two subcommittees are part of the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs.

The purpose of the hearing was to evaluate preparedness and mitigation efforts among flood-prone communities and responsible federal agencies. Maidment served as chair of the Committee on Floodplain Mapping Technologies and the Committee of FEMA Flood Maps, for the National Research Council of the National Academies. Given Maidment’s insight into these high stakes matter, his testimony focused on the accuracy of the FEMA map modernization process.
