The Society Award, which is IEEE Signal Processing Society’s highest honor, recognizes outstanding technical contributions in a field within the scope of the Signal Processing Society and outstanding leadership within the field. Bovik, who is a member of The University of Texas at Austin’s Wireless Network and Communications Group and the Institute for Neuroscience, is recognized “for fundamental contributions to digital image processing theory, technology, leadership and education." He will receive the award during the 2014 IEEE International Conference on Acoustics, Speech, and Signal Processing conference, which will take place in the spring in Florence, Italy.

Bovik picked up two other significant IEEE honors this year. He received the IEEE Signal Processing Magazine Best Paper Award for the paper “Mean squared error: Love it or leave it? ― A new look at signal fidelity measures.” Additionally, Bovik co-authored the paper “Motion tuned spatio-temporal quality assessment of natural videos,” which received the IEEE Signal Processing Society Young Author Best Paper Award for 2013. He co-wrote that paper with Kalpana Seshadrinathan, formerly of UT Austin.

“These unprecedented, simultaneous awards express the very high esteem that researchers in image and video processing have for Al Bovik’s research, teaching, leadership and service to the Society,” said Ahmed Tewfik, chair of the electrical and computering engineering department.

Alan Bovik holds the Keys and Joan Curry/Cullen Trust Endowed Chair.
