Event: The Center for Transportation Research at The University of Texas at Austin is hosting its annual symposium to inform transportation experts about using advanced technology to improve commuters’ safety and other transportation topics.

Background: More than 200 transportation experts from the Texas Department of Transportation and other organizations will meet to hear about new approaches to monitor the safety of roadways, to evaluate highway construction costs and to address other transportation concerns. At 1:30 p.m., keynote speaker Gregory Krueger will discuss the use of satellites and other communications technology to address safety and congestion issues on Michigan roadways. Krueger is program manager for that state’s Intelligent Transportation Systems program.

Beginning at 2:30 p.m., other experts will lead breakout sessions on topics that include the impact of highway corridors on trade between Mexico and the United States, ways to restore land near transportation projects and the retrofitting of roadways with bike lanes.
