The University of Texas at Austin and the Cockrell School of Engineering open their doors this Saturday, March 5 from 11 a.m.-5 p.m. for the 12th annual "Explore UT, The Biggest Open House in Texas!" Activities are free and no registration is required. The Cockrell School hosts more than 20 percent of the day's events.

More than 50,000 visitors are expected to arrive on campus for a day of free, fun and interesting lectures, performances, activities and demonstrations, which will happen rain or shine. At Explore UT, guests have the opportunity to explore every corner of the university's campus with more than 400 programs offered for visitors of all ages.

A few key engineering events include:

    • Chemical Engineers on Fire and Other Tricks: Chemical Engineering and Chemistry ShowExperience gas expansion and exploding bottles, frozen marshmallows and flames of all colors and sizes. Join students from the American Institute of Chemical Engineers as they demonstrate the power of chemistry.Location: In front of Chemical and Petroleum Engineering Building, all day event

    • What's Shaking? Earthquake Engineering: Protecting People and Property Visitors design a building using toothpicks and marshmallows, and test it in earthquake conditions. Students from the Earthquake Engineering Research Institute share information on earthquake engineering and how it protects people and property from earthquakes. Location: Basement of Ernest Cockrell Jr. Hall, all day event

    • Make Your Own Robotic Hand Ever wish you had an extra hand? Just make a robotic hand and take it home with you. Join members of Student Engineers Educating Kids to learn how to assemble a robotic hand. Location: Engineering-Science Building and Robert Lee Moore Hall Plaza, 11 a.m.-4:40 p.m.

    • Medieval Engineering: The Trebuchet Test your skills on the trebuchet, a medieval "launching" machine built by Tau Beta Pi, the national engineering honors society. Hit a target by launching tennis balls or water balloons across a lawn.Location: On the hill by the Cockrell School of Engineering's Clock Knot, 11 a.m.-4:40 p.m.Information on parking, food options and a list of activities are available online at the Explore UT Web site.
