Clint Dawson, leader of the Computational Hydraulics Group at the Institute for Computational Engineering and Sciences (ICES), and professor of aerospace engineering and engineering mechanics with the Cockrell School of Engineering, has been named the first recipient of the $1 million Edward S. Hyman Endowed Chair in Engineering.

The new chair was established in April, 2010 by Mr. Hyman, who earned a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering in 1967 from the university. Mr. Hyman is chairman of International Strategy & Investment Group Inc. and for 31 years has been rated the top economist on Wall Street by the Institutional Investors poll of investors.

As head of the ICES Computational Hydraulics Group, Dr. Dawson leads a team of a dozen researchers in areas including numerical methods for partial differential equations, specifically flow and transport problems in computational fluid dynamics; scientific computing and parallel computing; finite element analysis, discontinuous Galerkin methods; shallow water systems, hurricane storm surge modeling, rainfall-induced flooding; ground water systems, flow in porous media, geochemistry; data assimilation, parameter estimation, uncertainty and error estimation.

In addition to his teaching and research duties, Dr. Dawson is the graduate advisor of the Computational Sciences, Engineering, and Mathematics (CSEM) graduate program within ICES. He is also the associate chair for academic affairs and holds The Joe J. King Professorship.
