Janet Ellzey, professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering and vice provost for international programs at The University of Texas at Austin, has been named to oversee gender equity issues at the university. Ellzey will also retain her duties as vice provost for international programs.
Ellzey takes the role from Judy Langlois who has become interim dean of the School of Graduate Studies. Langlois had overseen gender equity issues since 2007 when she was named a vice provost.
Steven Leslie, executive vice president and provost of the university, announced Ellzey's designation earlier this month. Ellzey will maintain her responsibilities for international programs.
"The University of Texas at Austin is committed to gender equity for its faculty," Leslie said. "This transition will make sure that these issues continue to receive the attention they deserve while Judy Langolis turns her attention to graduate studies."
Ellzey earned her doctor's degree in mechanical engineering from the University of California, Berkeley in 1985 and joined The University of Texas at Austin in 1990.
Ellzey chaired the Women in Engineering Committee in the Cockrell School from 2002-07. She was a member of the Gender Equity Task Force from 2007-08 and served as chair for the Subcommittee on Faculty Compensation and Professional Development. She is the faculty mentor for Women in Mechanical Engineering in the Department of Mechanical Engineering.
