More than 1,400 new student engineers from The University of Texas at Austin participated in the 2013 Gone to Engineering event on the Engineering Plaza on Aug. 27, the night before classes began. Gone to Engineering is an annual fall welcoming event for incoming engineering students, organized by the Engineering Student Life office, which is followed by the university’s huge Gone to Texas celebration at the UT Tower.
The Cockrell School of Engineering incoming students — freshmen, graduate students and transfers — had the opportunity to get to know their fellow engineering peers, as well as explore the various student organizations that encompass a wide range of interests within the Cockrell School. Students also enjoyed music, barbecue provided by Fuschak’s Pit Bar-B-Q and the signing of the Class of 2017 banner.
In addition to free food and new friends, students said the main draw of attending Gone to Engineering included meeting professors and talking to members of student organizations to get a feel for what’s available and sign up to attend upcoming meetings.
“I figured going to this event would be a good way to actually interact with other engineering majors, since we all tend to be kind of scattered,” said Emily Hannon, a freshman in the Department of Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering. “I actually want to do environmental engineering, so looking at all the different sustainability organizations was also a big thing for me.”
